The Kerby Centre opened up North America's first elder abuse shelter in the late 1990s. Today, with just 15 beds, it remains Calgary's only elder abuse shelter. Cassandra, whose real name CBC News is not using to protect her identity from her abusers, wound up at the Kerby Centre's elder abuse shelter about three months ago. She says she's on nine waitlists for subsidized housing with no estimate for how long she could be waiting.
