Bournemouth beach was one of the hot spots yesterday as people across Britain made the most of temperatures higher than those in many popular resorts abroad LEEMCLEAN/BNPSBritain spent three days basking in sunshine as it enjoyed the warmest early May bank holiday weekend on record. Temperatures reached 28.7C at RAF Northolt in west London yesterday afternoon, topping the previous high for the three-day weekend, the Met Office said. The holiday was introduced in 1978 and the previous hottest temperature registered over the long weekend was 28.6C, recorded in 1995. Parts of the country were hotter over the bank holiday than destinations such as Ibiza, Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro. Sainsbury’s reported a big increase in sales of ice cream and burgers, while gin sales were projected to have risen by 300 per cent compared with the previous weekend.
