Hotspot of the week: AmsterdamCarmelrmd via Wikimedia Commons People dressed in orange on the canals of Amsterdam. Initially held in honour of the king's mother, Beatrix of the Netherlands, the public holiday was renamed King's Day after her abdication in 2013. Its former moniker of Queen's Day, however, is thought to be a reason that, in Amsterdam, it's also an unofficial LGBTQ festival. Do as the locals do and deck yourself out in orange - a nod to the royal family's House of Orange-Nassau lineage. The poshest areas, such as along Apollolaan just south of the city centre, can be great for picking up flea market bargains and it's also a bit calmer.
