Hospital security guard's attacker found not guilty due to insanity

Security guard Sharleen Harney-Kiriona was seriously injured at a surgical ward at Waikato Hospital in the early hours of May 15. A man who struck a security guard with an oxygen cylinder - badly injuring her - during a rampage through Waikato Hospital has been declared not guilty of the crime because he was insane at the time. The man faced several charges relating to the May 15 incident, including a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent laid in relation to the security guard he assaulted. Crown prosecutors in the case had no issue with and were not opposed to either the psychiatrist's reports or the judge's declaration of the not guilty verdict. KELLY HODEL/STUFF Tajuana Eltringham says she is annoyed that the man who attacked her mother has received a verdict of not guilty by insanity.
