LAM Wah Ee Hospital in Penang has finally been certified as a baby-friendly hospital after a three-year wait. Its Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) chairman Dr Adele Tan said the hospital had always been supportive of breastfeeding but earning the certificate had been difficult as there were many challenges along the way. “In January 2014, we embraced the World Health Organisation Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative adopted by the Health Ministry. “Even though it was not easy getting this certification, it is definitely worthwhile,” she said recently at the launch of the baby-friendly initiative of the hospital. “Up to now, only 17 of 175 private hospitals in the country have been certified as baby-friendly,” she said.
