Previous data released by the farm ministry (Horticulture Statistics at a Glance, 2015) shows that unlike foodgrains, horticulture crops survive poor rain due to better access to irrigation. The latest numbers show a 0.8% growth over production of 280.9 million tonnes in 2014-15. In 2015-16, horticulture production exceeded foodgrains output by over 31 million tonnes. According to the third advance estimate Indian farmers harvested 21 million tonnes of onions in 2015-16, a growth of 11% over previous year’s production. The estimates further show that Indian farmers harvested 91 million tonnes of fruits—a 2% rise in production over 2014-15- and 167 million tonnes of vegetables, similar to the harvest during the previous year.
