Prior to Thursday's police raid, those who made it out of the Kaduna institution were sometimes returned by families. Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a local organisation, estimates about 10 million children attend Islamic schools in the north. With few options, some parents defended the Kaduna institution, which charged fees of 35,000 naira ($US114) a term.
