Horowhenua councillor becomes first to have baby mid-term

Horowhenua councillor Piri-Hira Tukapua has become the first councillor in the district’s history to become a mid-term mum. Tukapua is in her third term on the Horowhenua District Council, is one of the youngest members and one of four women. Palmerston North City Council deputy mayor Aleisha Rutherford became the first councillor in the city’s history to have a baby in 2017. The Horowhenua District Council was unable to provide details of its maternity leave processes before the deadline.
