The Horn of Africa – the continent’s easternmost extension – has been battered by conflict, war, drought and hunger, pushing millions to the brink. Ethiopia, which covers over half of the region’s entire area, has signed a controversial deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland, prompting security and other concerns across the Horn of Africa. Under the deal, Somaliland is to lease part of its coastland around the port of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden to its landlocked neighbour — for 50 years — for military and commercial purposes. Somalia accused Ethiopia of ‘aggression’ and described the deal with Somaliland as an ‘impediment to peace and stability’.
