Hong Kong voters strike a blow for freedom


The people of Hong Kong have spoken, and spoken loudly: they want freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Three million people, fully 71 per cent of voters — a record for Hong Kong — cast ballots. It’s also a rebuke to the likes of China’s new ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, who on Friday lectured the Trudeau government and Canadians at large about “interfering” in the affairs of Hong Kong. The protesters, he declared, are nothing but “violent and radical criminals.”Within 48 hours, Hong Kong voters had shown him to be as wrong as he could possibly be. The regime that is running this extensive network of detention camps is the same one that the people of Hong Kong are challenging so openly.
