Hong Kong rage hits home

A protester attempts to cover the Hong Kong emblem with a British colonial flag in the Legislative Council building on Monday. The protesters are furious at a proposed law allowing extraditions to China, and they want Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, who is backed by Beijing, to step down. They entered the legislative building and searched the premises room by room for any remaining protesters. The protesters said they chose to descend on the Legislative Council because the police prevented them from getting close to the site of the government’s flag-raising ceremony that morning. At the handover of Hong Kong to China’s control in 1997, the Chinese government had agreed that Hong Kong could retain its justice system and protections for civil liberties for 50 years, under a philosophy commonly known as “one country, two systems”.
