Home Ministry issues showcause letter to Nanyang - Nation

PETALING JAYA: The Home Ministry has issued a showcause letter to Chinese daily Nanyang Siang Pau following its publication of a caricature that allegedly mocked several political leaders. Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim (pic) in a statement on Tuesday said the letter dated April 11 was issued under the Printing Presses and Publication Act 1964. "The editor has been given three days to reply to the showcause letter, and any further action would be taken in accordance with the regulations," he said. To make matters worse, it appears like it is mocking Parliament and Islam as the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) depicted in the caricature is related to Islam," said Alwi. On Monday Nanyang Siang Pau published a caricature titled “Monkey Act,” the cartoon featured two monkeys sitting on a tree named “Act 355” while a group of monkeys fight under it.
