Author Steve Ross (pictured as a child), 89, spent six years six years struggling to survive inhumane conditions in ten concentration death camps including the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau. He conceived of and spearheaded the campaign to build the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston in 1995 along Boston's Freedom Trail. In 1995, with the support of then-Boston mayor Ray Flinn, Ross (center) rallied the local Jewish community to create a New England Holocaust Memorial. While at the camp, Szmulek often hid in a latrine in human urine and excrement to avoid being murdered. Ross as returned to the New England Holocaust Memorial several times to speak about his experiences.
