Hollywood Broke Monthly U.S. Box Office Records Four Times In 2017

March of 2017 was the biggest March ever both in terms of domestic box office and in tickets sold. Again, in terms of tickets sold, it ranks ninth, with 8% separating it from second place (2002, with 85 million tickets versus 2017’s 78 million tickets). But its estimated 148 million tickets is just 2.5 million tickets away from second place and five million tickets away from the record-setting December of 2002 (The Two Towers, Catch Me If You Can, etc.). And, to the extent that summer 2017 was a loser, we still got Wonder Woman out of it. Conversely, last summer’s big movies were mostly pretty good, with The Beguiled, The Big Sick and Hitman’s Bodyguard thriving next to the well-received comic book superhero movies.
