Mr Hollande was asked in a newspaper interview if Britain could retain the advantages of EU membership. “It is not possible so it will thus become a third country in relation to the EU,” said the Socialist head of state. “That’s the problem of the United Kingdom: on leaving Europe, it thought that it could forge a strategic partnership with the United States. The United Kingdom made a bad choice at a bad time,” added Mr Hollande.
