While “sports is a risk factor” and athletic concussions get talked about most, they aren’t the only causes. Dr. Nick Reed, co-director and clinician scientist at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, said a concussion or brain injury can be caused by a variety of incidents, such as a motor vehicle accident or tobogganing. That’s in part why Holland Bloorview is partnering with Crescent School to shed light on what a concussion is, and what to do when someone has one. The hospital is currently conducting baseline testing on about 700 Crescent students. This way, Reed explained, there will be good data to compare a student’s health with in the event of a concussion.
