Holiday Self-Gifting Trend May Actually Hurt Retailers In The Long Run

Pexels.comNPD Group just released some interesting holiday data: Consumers doing holiday shopping are spending more on themselves than they ever have before. Some of those items could hold over to holiday inventory, but some had to move out to make room for inventory already on its way. And while that gives a boost to holiday spending, in the end, it just evens out across the whole year – at best. More likely, discounts to move older inventory combined with holiday sales events as the inventory piles up will lead to an unplanned margin hit. Retailers especially don’t want to get in a situation where they must support an enormous amount of sales over a concentrated period of time.
