HALIFAX — The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has announced safety changes that include life-saving training for more team staff and more thorough health screening of players in light of the sudden on-ice death of a 16-year-old player. An autopsy later revealed that Boyd had an undiagnosed heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. League president Gilles Corteau says all teams are now required to have at least three staff trained in life-saving techniques including the use of defibrillators, which must be present at all team events including games and practices. Corteau says prior to training camp players will also be required to fill out more in-depth health questionnaires and will be subject to more extensive physical examinations. Jordan’s father, Stephen Boyd, says he’s pleased with the league’s commitment to improve its safety protocol to potentially prevent incidents similar to the one involving his son.
