Rough figures from the transport department suggest that around 700 accidents were reported across the state since January 2017. "At the level of districts, deputy commissioners will head the safety council," Khare said. "Headed by a joint transport commissioner (road safety), for which we have created a separate post, it will help the government take up corrective measures to improve road safety. The new outfit will also have a DSP-ranked officer, representatives from road department and couple of other road safety experts. The state transport department has set aside Rs 15 crore for road safety of which Rs 5 crore has been given to police to procure gadgets.
