Bernard Cornwell is one of my favourite authors and I've just finished yet another of his Sharpe novels. The assault is led by Ensign Richard Sharpe (played by Sean Bean, of course, in the TV series). And in what may come as a nasty surprise for many Scottish nationalists, these heroes of the Empire were all wearing the famous scarlet tunic. There really is something very wrong with Scottish education if so many ignorant nationalists don't realise that Scots served as Redcoats. The cap badge of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards still shows the eagle, and the legend has it that he charged into the fray along with a number of Gordon Highlanders crying 'Scotland Forever!'.
