Historic tradition flies high again along Route 1A as a symbol of hope

RYE BEACH - Every July since 1946, a giant American flag has flown over The Drake House lawn kitty corner to the Rye Beach Club in honor of Independence Day. This year, for the first time, its owner unfurled it on Labor Day weekend as a symbol of spirit and hope. On a recent morning Route 1A was already a ribbon of traffic as beach-goers came to squeeze every last bit out of summer. The flag was first flown the summer after Drake’s father Philip and uncle Herbert returned from World War II. Drake said this summer he flew the flag from July 1 until tropical storm Isaias forced him to take it down.
