Washington (CNN) The Supreme Court grappled at times on Tuesday with historic cases that could impact millions of LGBTQ Americans. Twenty-two states, plus the District of Columbia have statutes protecting workers based on sexual orientation, according to the Williams Institute. That opinion --- Obergefell v. Hodges -- was decided when Justice Anthony Kennedy, seen as a champion for LGBTQ rights, was still on the bench. Supporters of LGBTQ rights say there is a lot on the line. People wait in line to get into the Supreme Court for oral arguments on LGBT workplace rights, on Tuesday, October 8.
