Highways England could face manslaughter charges over the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who was killed on a stretch of smart motorway, an inquest has heard. She said this included whether Highways England had a case to answer for either corporate manslaughter or gross negligence manslaughter. She added: 'He needs to answer a simple question- does he have the nerve to speak the truth about smart motorways?' The coroner said she needed a lot more information about smart motorways from Highways England to build a full picture. The smart motorway network covers around 500 miles in England, with an additional 300 miles planned by 2025.
