Highway 401 closed near Thousand Islands after 30-vehicle crash, spill


At least 29 people were taken to hospital in Kingston, Ont., after a 30-vehicle crash on Highway 401 east of the city closed the highway in both directions and spilled toxic material at the scene. Some toxic material was spilled at the scene, and three police officers, five firefighters and three paramedics are being treated for exposure to the chemical. Ontario Provincial Police closed Highway 401 between Reynolds Road and Mallorytown Road after one of the tractor trailers leaked a toxic substance. (CBC)Police described conditions on the highway as "near whiteout" when the crash occurred around 2 p.m. Hospital staff expected about 19 people to be brought there from the crash scene, according to spokesperson John Pereira.
