Sally Almaklani, a freshman at a New York high school, will have her artwork on display at the US capitol building as a part of the yearly Congressional Art Competition. Almaklani’s piece depicted an image of a woman wearing a hijab, with the message “my hijab makes me powerful” written on the top in Arabic. She was honored at a reception in D.C. last month and her artwork will be displayed for a whole year. The competition is sponsored by members of the House of Representatives and Almaklani was sponsored by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, NY-14). Almaklani’s high school, Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & the Arts, is located in the representative’s districtAlmaklani started drawing because of her sister and after a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, has continued to draw.
