High ranking Peel cop charged with sexual assault

A high ranking Peel Regional Police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a police colleague, the Star has learned. Daniel Johnstone, a former investigator with Peel’s homicide squad, was charged with one count of sexual assault Friday, following an investigation by the province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). According to a source with knowledge of the allegations who spoke on condition of anonymity, Johnstone is alleged to have assaulted a female Peel police officer. An SIU spokesperson confirmed late Friday that the SIU laid the charge against Johnstone. Prior to his promotion, he was listed as being on Ontario’s 2016 Sunshine List, earning $179,000.
