High cancer cases and late-stage diagnosis worrying, says DG

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of new cancer cases in Malaysia went up by 11.3% over two five-year-periods, according to the National Cancer Registry Report 2012–2016. Put in another way, the cancer incidence rate was 86 cases for every 100,000 males versus 102 cases for every 100,000 females. Among males, the most common cancer is colorectal, followed by lungs and prostate, and among females, it is breast followed by colorectal and cervix. In Malaysia, cancer resulted in 16,000 deaths last year and in the world, 9.6 million deaths were reported last year. “The good news is that the rate of cervix cancer has gone down drastically, from eight to six cases per 100,000 females here, ” he said.
