In the PC especially, fast solid state drives remain one of the best, most effective upgrades in terms of user experience. Solid state drives are also more durable and uses less power than traditional hard drives with spinning, magnetic platters. Unless you’ve got a massive budget (relatively speaking), however, going with solid state storage usually means sacrificing some capacity. Some of the most affordable (and lowest performing) 1TB solid state drives, for example, sell for about $240 at the moment, whereas some of the better 1TB hard drives can be had for right around $50. An announcement that just came out of Toshiba will help further shift the scale in favor of solid state storage, though.
