Along with the interim order on Monday, it also asked the authorities why it would not order them to pay Tk 5 million to each of the families as compensation. The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the orders and a set of rules after an initial hearing of a public interest litigation filed by Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust or BLAST. Abdul Halim, the petitioner’s lawyer, said the secretaries to home affairs and road transport, and the BRTA chairman have been asked to pay the compensations. The home and road transport secretaries, BRTA, inspector general of police, Chattogram police commissioner, additional police commissioners (traffic) of Dhaka, Gazipur, Barishal and Sylhet, and OCs of different police stations have been asked to respondto the rules within four weeks. The High Court on Feb 5 issued similar orders and rules over the deaths of a class eight student on Jan 22 and a college student on Jan 16 in Chattogram and two children in Dhaka’s Keraniganj on Jan 28.
