In a modest yet well cared-for home in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver exists a hidden museum. Mike Chandler, 76, has been building a model railroad in his 500-square-foot basement since 1998. Every tree is handmade, every single railroad tie — the rectangular support for rails — is hand-cut, stained and meticulously placed. Chandler estimates there are nearly five kilometres of electric wiring to make the railroad run. Chandler is among hobbyists in Metro Vancouver who have spent decades building their model railroads, many of them from scratch.
