EDMONTON—Walking through the University of Alberta’s north campus, Robin Howse can’t help but see the hidden history wrapped up in the buildings and artwork all around her. Robin Howse, a native studies student at the University of Alberta, is photographed in front of Rutherford House on the U of A campus. Howse made a map exploring the hidden Indigenous and colonial history of sites like Rutherford House around campus. “I was a little bit over ambitious, and chose all the sites,” Howse admitted. The Sweetgrass Bear, an Indigenous art sculpture installed on the quad at the University of Alberta campus, is one of several places flagged in native studies student Robin Howse's map exploring the historical context of campus sites.
