The former deputy prime minister told a Thatcherism conference that he was selected for the Gower constituency in 1959 only by chance. When Hezza turned up to the meeting, the Conservative chairman cheered: “Thank God you’ve come boyo. None of the others bothered to turn up.” During the election Hezza had a run-in with Aneurin Bevan. No one came to Heseltine’s public meetings, so he decided to hijack a Labour one instead. He had tucked himself into a balcony at the Elysium Cinema in Swansea when Nye Bevan came on stage and introduced the Labour candidate for Gower.
