Hermine became a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday as it passed over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico approaching the northwest coast of Florida, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm, located 195 kilometers (120 miles) south of Apalachicola, Florida, was moving toward the north-northeast at 22 kph (14 mph). NHC forecasters said they expected Hermine to strengthen slightly before making landfall in the wee hours of Friday. Hermine will weaken as it moves over Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina on its way back to the Atlantic Ocean, becoming a tropical storm over the weekend, forecasters said. The forecast also calls for heavy accumulations of rain in parts of northwest Florida and southern Georgia, creating the possibility of flash floods.
