The number of biogas collection wells was recently increased from 42 to 64, with another 22 wells planned for next year. At about half the heating value of natural gas, this amount of landfill biogas still represents a significant source of renewable power. The province's Crown corporation would be the long-term beneficiary of the financial proceeds from displacing about $3 million of natural gas annually. This is the right time to invest in multi-fuel-burning boilers that can use landfill biogas and natural gas for backup.
