When blueprints for Jeff Bezos’ planned renovation of his Washington, D.C., home were made public in 2018, one notable feature was an expansive so-called garden room set between two terraces. Steve Vanze, co-founder of the D.C. architecture firm that created the plan, says he is adding such rooms—also called solariums or sunrooms—to about 20% of the new homes he designs. Although he wouldn’t discuss Mr. Bezos’ plans, he says such rooms typically cost about $300,000.
