Those who are between 50 and 59 years old made up nearly a fifth of all positive cases, while those ages 40 to 49 and 60 to 69 each made up about 16 per cent of the country’s cases. Men were overrepresented in the 40–49 age group, but otherwise there were few differences between cases among men and women. By then, the number of community transmission cases being reported each day had already begun to outpace travel-related cases. The data also shows a day before the federal government effectively closed the borders to international flights on March 16, community transmission cases outpaced travel-related cases. On March 19, the day after the government closed the U.S.-Canada border to all non-essential travel, there were 68 new cases of COVID-19 related to travel – and 148 new cases from community spread.
