30 Sep 2023| 06:41am ISTGoan fishermen furious at outsider fishing boats invading Goan waters with impunityGoenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) blasts Fisheries dept for Gujarat and Karnataka boats using illegal gear fishing in our watersTeam HeraldMARGAO: Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) on Friday criticised the Fisheries Department for consistently failing to act against boats from other states entering Goan territorial waters and said fishing boats from Gujarat and Karnataka have been spotted in Goan waters carrying illegal fishing equipment. “For the last two weeks boats from Gujarat and Karnataka have been fishing in our territorial waters. Hundreds of such boats fish within state territorial waters, even after their crew members heckle the Goan fishermen and also destroy their nets,” said Olencio Simoes, GRE General Secretary. Souza further questioned the government as to how the traditional fishermen of the State are expected to survive if there is round-the-year illegal fishing by such boats. “As of today, it is Gujarat and Karnataka and later it will be LED light fishing by Goan boats,” Souza added.
