Henry Louis Gates Jr. is one of a handful of academics who have crossed over into something approaching true celebrity. If he’s successful doing that, I think black people want him, because he is smart, sensitive, strong. Political correctness is heinous if it comes from a person on the left or the right or a person of color or a white person.
