This has always been the case with New Irish Writing. Years ago I remember Marcus taking exception to being called a Jewish Irish writer. John McGahern once told me he would consider it an insult to be called an “Irish” writer or a “Catholic” writer. No doubt there are other challenges to come but whatever happens, to misquote Beckett, New Irish Writing will go on. She was shortlisted for a Hennessy poetry award in 1992.
