A newly elected governor and her husband, a senator, died in a helicopter crash while travelling to Mexico City on Christmas Eve. The helicopter came down shortly after take-off in the central Mexican state of Puebla. Martha Erika Alonso, 45, was sworn in this month as Puebla’s first female governor. Her husband, Rafael Moreno Valle, 50, preceded her as governor between 2011 and 2017. President López Obrador’s left-wing Morena party had challenged the validity of Ms Alonso’s victory in July.
