Heinz Wolff, who has died aged 89, was one of a long line of distinguished British scientists who became even more distinguished television presenters and apostles of science. “We really cut it rather fine,” Wolff told the broadcaster Sue Lawley on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 1998. In 1983 he founded the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering, now housed in the Heinz Wolff building at the university, and in the course of a research career authored or co-authored around 120 papers in scientific journals.
