A special team of CID from Dhaka apprehended Shahinur at Subidbazar Bankalapara Abbasia Jame Masjid in the early hours of Friday. In 2005, Shahinur was elected MP in the Sunamganj 3 by-election after the death of Awami League leader and former foreign minister Abdus Samad Azad. He, however, contested the general elections in 2008 and 2018 as a candidate of four-party alliance and Jatiya Oikyafront respectively, but lost both the elections.
