Heavy duty bike locks in demand as thefts surgeBRADEN FASTIER / Stuff.co.nz Nelson Bays crime prevention manager Senior Sergeant Scott Richardson talks about preventing your bike being stolen. Bike shops say there have been a rush of orders for heavy duty D-lock, U-lock, metal folding locks or motorbike chain systems. Avanti Plus Richmond had both heavy duty chain locks and D-locks in stock but also confirmed there was now more demand for both as customers proved increasingly keen to pay more for better quality locks. Nelson police currently have around 70 stolen bikes in storage, and that is only a portion of the thefts. Richardson said one simple measure was to remove the bike seat when it was left unattended – "no-one wants to steal a bike without a seat".
