AFP, WASHINGTONUS President Donald Trump yesterday faced the most perilous challenge of his three-year term as public hearings convened as part of the impeachment probe against him opened under the glare of the TV cameras. “Democrats in Washington would rather pursue outrageous hoaxes and delusional witch hunts, which are going absolutely nowhere. Don’t worry about it,” Trump said in a speech to the Economic Club of New York on Tuesday. Polls show a slim majority of Americans favor impeaching Trump, but they also show that the president’s sizeable voter base rejects the allegations. Democrats have amassed evidence that Trump sought to leverage Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s desire for a meeting between the two leaders and for about US$391 million in aid to get Ukraine to find dirt on Biden.
