Health unit issues cold weather alert in London, Ont., as temperatures plunge

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued its first cold weather alert of the year as temperatures are expected to drop to -17 C overnight, feeling more like -26 C with the wind chill. The health unit issues an alert when Environment Canada forecasts lows beneath – 15 C and windchill values below -20 C.The daytime high for Saturday is only expected to reach -12 C, with windchill values as low as -27 C. The temperature is expected to drop back down to -17 C overnight. “The potential damage that winter weather can do to the body shouldn’t be underestimated,” said David Pavletic, Environmental Health Manager with the MLHU, in a statement. Cold and strong winds can lead to frostbite on exposed skin. The Central Library will be offering a warming station on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more on warming stations offered by the City, visit their website.
