Health professionals are warning people to be vigilant for symptoms of meningococcal disease after a death in Wellington. Medical Officer of Health for Wellington Regional Health Dr Annette Nesdale said the cases were a reminder to be watchful of the disease. Nationwide there have been 20 cases of meningococcal disease confirmed this year. Since 2010 there have been 52 reported cases of people contracting meningococcal disease in the Wellington and Wairarapa region.
