Poppers were sold by adult stores until an order earlier this year to destroy stock. In March Medsafe, New Zealand’s medical regulatory body, implemented a gazette notice making all alkyl nitrites – including poppers – prescription-only medicines. That is despite limited evidence of harm over decades of use of poppers in New Zealand, the foundation said. During the transition to pharmaceutical poppers, adult stores and venues should be offered exemptions to continue to sell poppers. Aids Foundation executive director Dr Jason Myers said while the ban was an “extreme” response, the original intention did not appear to be to disadvantage particular communities.
