Taoiseach Albert Reynolds welcomes Republic of Ireland manager Jack Charlton at Dublin Airport after the team secured qualification to the 1994 World Cup. Photo by Ray McManus/SportsfileWE were playing Wales at Lansdowne Road and Big Jack had their team written down on the back of a cigarette packet. I have listened to a lot of people talking about our Ireland team and they are quick to criticise Jack’s style and approach, but I have a perspective on this topic that is not always considered. We had some great players in the years before Jack got the Ireland job, but the managers we had before him never got the best out. There was a lack of leadership at the helm of the Ireland team, but all that changed when Jack took over.
