Eruptions began in the rift zone to the east of the Kilauea volcano Thursday, prompting evacuations of the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions in Puna on the island's southeastern corner. New fissure opens in Leilani Estates on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mandatory evacuations for the Leilani Estates subdivision have been ordered. The opening of the eruptive fissures was preceded earlier this week by earthquakes and reports of a number of cracks in streets in Leilani Estates. The lava flow has prompted the mandatory evacuation of about 1,700 residents of Leilani Estates," reads a release from the governor's office.
