Have We Stolen A Generation's Independent Thought?

The complaint has come across my desk three times this week, voiced by someone in the higher education world complaining about the quality of student arriving in their ivy-covered halls. There's no college student independent thought index we can consult to check for a dip. Since the advent of No Child Left Behind, the US has used high stakes standardized tests as accountability measures for schools, districts, and teachers. They also teach students that independent, open-ended, exploratory thought is neither necessary nor desired to navigate the world. If it has stifled a generation's desire for independent thought, that is no surprise.
